KANSAS CITY • A man from Kirkwood who was already awaiting trial for allegedly participating in the sexual slavery of a mentally impaired woman in outstate Missouri is now charged with attempting to hire a hit man to kill her.

Bradley Cook, 32, was named on a superseding indictment in federal court here Wednesday, charging him with attempting to tamper with a victim, attempted retaliation against a witness and attempted tampering with a witness.

Marilyn Bagley, 45, was charged with participating with her husband, Edward Bagley, in exploiting the woman. Marilyn Bagley was named on charges of conspiracy, sex trafficking, forced labor trafficking, document servitude and use of an interstate facility to facilitate unlawful activity. She pleaded not guilty and was freed on her own recognizance.

Two of the five men charged in the case already have pleaded guilty to a conspiracy count involving sex and torture of the same woman in the Bagleys’ trailer home in Lebanon, Mo.

Prosecutors allege that the Bagleys recruited the victim when she was 16, gave her a home and groomed her as a sex slave with the promise of a “great life.”

When the girl turned 18, officials claim, Edward Bagley had her sign a sex-slave contract and then beat, whipped, flogged, nearly suffocated, shocked and mutilated her, and posted videos of her on Internet sites.

He also allegedly let other men — including Cook — participate in similar acts in exchange for steaks, cigarettes, clothing, lighters and cash.

Marilyn Bagley is accused of not doing anything to stop it.

In court documents filed this year, prosecutors alleged that Cook attempted to hire a hit man while he was incarcerated in Leavenworth, Kan., to kill both the victim and Assistant U.S. Attorney Cynthia Cordes. Cook was moved to a jail in Bates County, Mo.; the female victim was placed in protective custody, and additional security was provided to Cordes.

The indictment does not include anything about the alleged threats against Cordes, who cannot file charges on that claim because it would be a conflict of interest.

My Comments :

This case hits close to home, as my family is from this area. I think it’s outrageous that people would behave this way toward another human being, in this country or elsewhere. We hear statistics on human trafficking and slavery, forced labor and so on, but when we hear the details of a case like this one, we are shocked and outraged. As we should be. But we need to understand that there are millions of slaves being tortured, abused and mistreated every day. Be outraged about this case and be outraged about all the others out there who are still trapped and living a nightmare that we cannot imagine.
